Which Products Contain Talcum Powder?

Talcum powder is made of talc, a naturally forming mineral commonly found in rock deposits throughout the world. Talc is the softest natural mineral and can be crushed into a refined, white powder that absorbs moisture and reduces friction.

Talc’s soft and absorbent qualities make it useful at keeping skin dry and preventing skin irritation and rashes. Because of this, talc is a popular ingredient in many personal hygiene and cosmetic products, including:

  • Baby Powder
  • Shower to Shower
  • Foot powder
  • Female hygiene products
  • Deodorant
  • Sanitary pads and diapers
  • Treatments for skin irritation and rashes

Because talc is used in many popular hygienic products, many women regularly dust their genital area with talcum powder as part of their hygienic routine. However, those who do may be at risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Does Talcum Powder Cause Cancer?

For decades, Johnson & Johnson marketed its talcum powder products, including Baby Powder and Shower to Shower, to women as safe and effective for female hygiene.

However, many women claim to have developed ovarian cancer as a result of applying talcum powder to their genital area for several years as part of their hygiene routine.

Although Johnson & Johnson maintains that its products do not harm consumers, more than four decades worth of studies and research have provided evidence that links talcum powder to ovarian cancer.

The first study to suggest a link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer was published in 1971 in the medical journal The Lancet. Researchers conducting the study found that more than 75 percent of the ovarian tumors they examined were deeply embedded with talc particles.

In the years following the initial discovery, more than 20 additional studies have examined the link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer. These studies have yielded crucial evidence that supports the theory that talcum powder places women at risk of developing ovarian cancer.

For instance, in a 1982 study, researchers found that women were at a 92 percent increased risk of developing ovarian cancer when they used talcum powder during ovulation. Additionally, the study’s researchers found this provides support for an association between talc and ovarian cancer because of the similarity of ovarian cancer to mesothelioma and the chemical relation of talc to asbestos.

In a 2016 study, researchers examining ovarian cancer in African-American women discovered 63 percent of women with ovarian cancer had directly applied themselves with talcum powder throughout their life. The study found that women who directly dusted themselves with talcum powder were at a high risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Although the American Cancer Society has not named talcum powder as a known carcinogen, it does advise women against using talc-based products for female hygiene around the genitals. Likewise, the National Cancer Institute concluded that women who avoid using talc-based products around their genitals may reduce their risk of developing ovarian cancer by 10 percent.

How Do I Know If I Can File a Talcum Powder Lawsuit?

If you have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and believe it is directly related to your use of talc-based products, you may be entitled to file a talcum powder lawsuit against the product’s manufacturer.

During a free initial consultation, our defective drug attorneys will review your claim to determine if your ovarian cancer diagnosis may be linked to talcum powder. Our attorneys will review several details about your diagnosis, such as:

  • Were you diagnosed with ovarian cancer?
  • Did you regularly dust your genital area with talcum powder for more than five years?
  • Do you have a genetic disorder that predisposes you to ovarian-based diseases?
  • What was the frequency in which you dusted your genital area with talcum powder?
  • Did the results of your biopsy show proof that talcum powder was present in your ovaries?

If we determine that you have a case, we will help you pursue a talcum powder lawsuit to recover the compensation you deserve.

Why Should I File a Talcum Powder Lawsuit?

Ovarian cancer is a serious disease that is often detected in its later stages when it poses a significant risk of death. If you believe you developed ovarian cancer as a result of using a talc-based product like Baby Powder or Shower to Shower, you deserve justice and compensation for your pain and suffering.

Although there are dozens of medical studies and thousands of lawsuits have filed by women who claim their ovarian cancer was directly caused by using talcum powder, manufacturers like Johnson & Johnson continue to deny talc-based products are dangerous to women.

Additionally, cosmetic products like talcum powder are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by less restrictive qualifications than drugs or medical products. This means talcum powder was not thoroughly reviewed by the FDA to determine its safety before it was sold to consumers.

Many of the 5,500 talcum powder lawsuits filed against Johnson & Johnson allege the manufacturer knew its talc-based products put women at risk of developing ovarian cancer, but failed to disclose this information. Additionally, talcum powder lawsuits claim products like Baby Powder and Shower to Shower fail to warn female users about the potential medical risks of using these products.

How Can I Be Compensated for My Talcum Powder Lawsuit?

Although no amount of money can fully compensate you or a loved one being diagnosed with ovarian cancer, a talcum powder lawsuit may help to alleviate some difficulties you may be facing. This may include compensation for:

  • Past and future medical expenses
  • Lost wages
  • Loss of earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering
  • Loss of enjoyment of life
  • Loss of companionship

Additionally, some victims may be awarded punitive damages with their case. However, punitive damages are reserved only for cases of extreme wrongdoing or negligence and are meant as a form of monetary punishment rather than compensation for the victim.
